Two freshmen in a row have won the Heisman Trophy. At this point, it certainly isn’t unheard of for freshmen to pose a viable threat against more seasoned players in the coveted race, and Nick Chubb fits the mold for an outstanding freshman candidate. Chubb has dominated the field for the Georgia Bulldogs since Todd Gurley has been suspended, being the only starting rusher for two games and has amounted 345 yards in that short period of time. If Gurley remains suspended for the season and Chubb continues his stellar rushing game, he could easily be a contender for the Heisman.
It is uncertain when Gurley will come back; Georgia has remained mum on his status, only stating that he is suspended indefinitely. Even if Gurley comes back for Georgia’s game against the Florida Gators on Nov. 1 or for a later game, Chubb will most likely split much more of the playing time him than he had at the beginning of the season. If that’s the case, Chubb’s caliber and value can only go up,having already exceeded expectations after stepping into Gurley’s shoes, and led the Bulldogs to two road victories.
Chubb would be going up against the likes of Dak Prescott, Marcus Mariotta and Melvin Gordon for the Heisman honor, all of whom have had fantastic performances throughout the season. There is also some potential that Gurley and 2013 Heisman winner Jameis Winston are in the running, despite their NCAA and legal woes. Even though Chubb has only been a viable force for a couple games, he stepped into a leadership role whilst Georgia fans felt shock, despair and even anger at Gurley’s suspension and has elated their spirits. With the way he keeps tallying rushing yards and touchdowns, Chubb could be this season’s biggest surprise in the fight for the Heisman Trophy.
