Since June Jones walked out on the SMU Mustangs back in September, there have been rumblings that the once-great college football program was interested in hiring former Texas Longhorns legend Mack Brown as their head coach.
Well it appears that could actually come to fruition instead of flaming out as so many other big-name head coach hire rumors do.
According to Bill Nichols of the Dallas Morning News, The Mustangs have reportedly been in talks with Brown, and have tabled an offer in the ballpark of $4 million annually for eight years. It was initially believed that Brown wouldn’t be willing to give up his cozy position as an ESPN analyst, but those types of figures could sway him towards a return to coaching.
This move would be about more than just on-field results, though. Just being able to print Brown’s name in their programs would help the Mustangs influence boosters to write bigger checks, bring in big-name recruits and keep other high-ranking school officials happy.
After the disastrous start to their 2014 season, SMU is desperately looking to bring in a head coach who can be a difference maker on the field as well. They need someone who can whip this team into shape, bring in top-level recruits and implement the necessary fixes to turn this program around.
While some will be concerned about Brown’s ability to do that seeing how his time at Texas ended, there aren’t many better options than the legendary head honcho.
We’ll see if anything comes of this supposed offer, but it’s looking like SMU could get their man with the money they’re willing to throw at him.
