We hear all of the time about college athletes receiving “illegal” benefits from agents, boosters, etc. However, as you may not know, it’s completely acceptable for the aforementioned folks to lend a helping hand to college coaches.

Specifically, we’re talking about Alabama head football coach Nick Saban, who reportedly has his $3.1 million home paid for by the Crimson Tide Foundation, a nonprofit group whose goal is to raise private funds for the Alabama athletic department. Yes, this is the same Saban who makes approximately $7 million per year.

The organization wasn’t obligated to pay for Saban’s house, but did so in an attempt to make sure that the legendary coach was well taken care of. Not only did they pick up the bill for the house, but they continue to pay the annual property taxes as well.

“It’s not all that unusual in the world for universities to provide the housing,” said Scott Phelps, the assistant secretary for the Crimson Tide Foundation. “We want to keep him happy. We think he’s the best coach in America.”

Funds from this organization can be used for anything from scholarships to athletic-related construction projects, such as Alabama’s state-of-the-art athletic facilities. Obviously taking care of their coach also fits in the equation, even if it means paying for a house that he clearly has the funds to afford on his own.

It’s ridiculous to think that the NCAA is okay with this organization paying for Saban’s pricey home, but paying athletes isn’t acceptable. The world is full of double standards.
