As one of those teams that no one saw contending for much of anything this season, the Arizona Wildcats have taken college football by surprise with a young, yet talented, 6-2 team. The Colorado Buffaloes began the year 2-2, but have lost five consecutive games with three games against ranked conference opponents remaining — they could still play spoiler this year.
With freshmen starting at both running back and quarterback, Arizona looked to be a rebuilding unit this year, but no one saw the success of Anu Solomon and Nick Wilson reaching these heights. Solomon leads the 10th-best passing offense in the nation with 2,605 yards, 21 touchdowns and just five interceptions while rushing for another 199 yards. Wilson leads the 54th-ranked run game with 610 yards and seven touchdowns even after being limited to just 19 carries in the past three games due to an injury. Terris Jones-Grigsby has filled in nicely, rushing for 456 yards and three touchdowns on 5.6 yards per touch. Solomon has developed a favorite target in Cayleb Jones who has 50 catches for 716 yards and eight touchdowns. Senior Austin Hill is second on the team with 30 catches for 413 yards and four touchdowns.
Colorado’s offense hasn’t been quite as impressive as Arizona’s this season, ranking 17th in passing yards per game and 61st in rushing yards per game — however, both offenses have been closely ranked to each other. Sophomore wide receiver Sefo Liufau has been a solid leader and is having a better season than he had a year ago, passing for 2,590 yards and 25 touchdowns with 12 interceptions and a 65 percent completion rate. Nelson Spruce has filled the No. 1 wide receiver slot this season, catching 90 passes for 1,002 yards and 11 touchdowns — he has become one of the top receivers in the country. Shay Fields is second on the team with 40 catches while adding 317 yards and three scores while D.D. Goodson is second on the team in receiving yards with 374 yards and two touchdowns on 37 catches. Michael Adkins II, Tony Jones and Christian Powell lead the run game with a combined 1,044 yards and seven touchdowns.
Defensively, Colorado has been one of the worst units in the nation this year. While Colorado has had a nearly impossible time slowing down the opposition’s offense, the Buffaloes have the 118th-ranked scoring defense and the 97th-ranked total defense. Arizona is also a team that has struggled on this side of the ball, mostly known for its offense. The Wildcats rank 72nd in points allowed and 101st in total yards allowed per game.
Colorado will travel to Arizona to take on the Buffaloes at 8 p.m. EST on Saturday, Nov. 8. The game will be broadcasted on the Pac-12 Network.
PREDICTION: Arizona 45, Colorado 27
