The Washington Huskies’ secondary suffered a huge blow on Thursday when it was revealed star cornerback Marcus Peters was dismissed from the team. Even though the removal does not come as a big surprise to the people who follow the Huskies regularly for the simple reason that Peters is a hard person to get along with, it is still one that has been met with shock.
Peters frequently gets into arguments with the coaching staff, acts as if he is above the team and is not shy from throwing the occasional tantrum on the sidelines. He was suspended for the Sept. 13 game after he threw his helmet and gloves on the sideline in a moment of frustration against Eastern Washington. He also was seen laughing on the sidelines with a teammate while Washington got annihilated by the Oregon Ducks. The final straw was getting into an argument with an assistant coach on Wednesday.
At 6-3 (2-3 conference record), the Huskies do not have a realistic shot at winning the Pac-12 North division. With that said, Peters is the superstar of the defense, if not the team. He led Washington in interceptions (3) and passes defended (10) this season. Therefore, not having him in the secondary, an area of the team that is weak as it is, will certainly hurt Washington down the stretch and in the bowl game that they’re already eligible for.
Even though the team is sure to suffer without Peters on the field, the coaching staff was correct to remove the parasite from the locker room. Peters has consistently been a bad apple for the team, which stretches back to bad conduct last year. Washington has made it perfectly clear that they will not tolerate poor behavior, no matter how talented a single player may be.
Peters is projected to be a first round selection in the 2015 NFL Draft.
