Heisman winner Jameis Winston is allegedly involved in a point-shaving scandal, but he could not possibly be this dumb, right? The story was initially run by gambling website, IBN Sports Wrap, and then TMZ picked up the ball and ran with it as well. They even got in touch with the FBI, who could neither confirm nor deny anything — what a shocker.
The allegation is that the QB conspired with an old high school teammate to make sure the Louisville Cardinals (+1) covered in the first half of their game against Florida State. The accusation seems unlikely, however, you can bet that he will be under an intensely bright spotlight for the next few months and beyond.
Winston’s Heisman hopes for this season were already in the toilet, but they have now officially been flushed. Controversy curiously follows this kid everywhere, and it does make you wonder whether there could be any truth to the claim. It certainly is true that the general public will believe anything to do with Winston, which shows why this rumor has caught fire so quickly. People are more than happy to throw him under the bus after all his negative publicity this year, and it is hard to blame them for that.
Where do we draw the line when it comes to raining hate down on an “amateur” athlete? It is unclear, however, I am willing to give Winston some benefit of the doubt until more concrete details emerge. But it should be interesting to see if these allegations decreases his impact on Saturday.
If the past is any indication, it will not.
