Two-time Super Bowl-winning head coach Mike Shanahan probably enjoyed his hiatus, but he now wants to get back on the football field. Surprisingly, his desire is a return to college football and not the NFL. 24/7 Sports broke this news recently and cited unnamed sources.
Recruiting insider Clint Brewster wrote that “sources close to the situation have told Wolverine247 that former Washington Redskins head coach Mike Shanahan would be interested in returning to college football for either the [Michigan] Wolverines or Florida Gators job if they were to open.”
Shanahan used to be a coordinator at Florida, and so it would not be shocking to see him make a return there. If he joined the Wolverines, though, it would be a much better situation for someone trying to rehabilitate their reputation — that is a fanbase in desperate need of some wins.
During his last stint as a coach, Shanahan used spread-offense concepts with Redskins QB Robert Griffin III, so he might be more than ready for a transition to the college game. His son, Kyle Shanahan, was his offensive coordinator on that squad, however it seems unlikely that they would team up again in the collegiate ranks. The younger Shanahan has had success in his work as the Cleveland Browns’ offensive coordinator, and he could find himself being sought after by some NFL teams seeking a new leader.
It must be stated that Brady Hoke is still coaching the Wolverines until further notice, but hiring Shanahan would be a bold move for this program that has seen better days.
