There may have been no place like home for Dorothy, but don’t expect the sentiment to carry over for the Kansas Jayhawks as the No. 4-ranked TCU Horned Frogs pay a visit to Lawrence. The Jayhawks, who have dropped five of their last six games, meet up with the Horned Frogs at the exact wrong time, as TCU is playing some of the best football in the country of late. This one has the potential to get ugly in a hurry.
TCU comes in riding a wave of positives that have vaulted the Horned Frogs into the thick of the National Championship discussion. Trevone Boykin has firmly established himself as a Heisman Trophy contender, and leads the eighth-ranked passing attack in the country, but his effectiveness has not been limited to the air. Boykin is second on the team in rushing, with last week’s 123-yard, three-touchdown performance in his team’s 41-20 blowout win over Kansas State proving just how explosive he can be.
Prior to Kansas’ 34-14 win over Iowa State a week ago, little good could be said about a Jayhawks season that included a five-game losing streak and the dismissal of head coach Charlie Weis. However, quarterback Michael Cummings has been a bright spot since taking over the starting job from Montell Cozart. Still, with a scoring offense that ranks 121st nationally, not much is going well on the offensive side of the ball. Defensively, the Jayhawks haven’t fared much better, with the 90th nationally ranked scoring defense, and are among the worst defensive units in the Big-12 in most statistical categories.
There really isn’t much hope out there for Kansas to upset the Horned Frogs in this one. The only thing that could possibly slow down the offensive juggernaut that is TCU in this game is the weather. The potential for snow moves into the forecast in the afternoon, and if the conditions turn sloppy during the game, it might take some of the high-flying aspects out of the Horned Frogs’ attack. Still, don’t count on it.
