The resounding thought about Florida State this year is that, because of its strength of schedule and playing in a weak ACC, it has to win out to have a shot at making college football‘s Final Four. There’s no room for error; the Seminoles have to be perfect or their dreams of back-to-back National Championships could be gone. A loss could also mean the loss of their head coach.
Jimbo Fisher has done a phenomenal job replacing the legendary Bobby Bowden: in four-plus seasons, he has racked up a 55-10 record, including 4-0 in bowl games; the Noles have also won two ACC Championships and will play for a third in December; and last but certainly not least, there was the National Championship he helped bring back to Tallahassee, and we can’t forget that it was his gutsy fake punt call in the second quarter that helped change that entire game.
So really, is there anything to worry about? Well, maybe.
Let’s follow the bouncing ball here. If (and by if, I really mean when) Michigan fires Brady Hoke, it’s safe to say they’ll have their eyes set on San Francisco 49ers head coach Jim Harbaugh. Let’s say Harbaugh decides to stay in the pro ranks, that now leaves Michigan on option No. 2, and you can believe their crosshairs will be set on LSU‘s Les Miles.
The Wolverines once tried and almost convinced the “Mad Hatter” to leave Baton Rouge for Ann Arbor, and now with a second crack at him, it may be enough to bring the former Michigan assistant home.
For those of you keeping score at home: Hoke is out, Harbaugh is still in the NFL and Miles is trading the purple and gold for the maize and blue. So that leaves the Tigers, one of the premiere college programs in the country, looking for a head coach. Who will be first on that list? Well, you’d have to think it would be Fisher.
Before coming to Tallahassee as an offensive coordinator in 2007, he ran Nick Saban‘s offense in Baton Rouge from 2000-2006 and picked up a National Championship along the way.
Still, why is a return to Death Valley so intriguing? It’s not like LSU can pay more than Florida State or that they have top-notch facilities, because they’re equal. Not being able to win a championship isn’t the issue because he just did that a year ago. The lure of the SEC is what could scare Florida State fans. Moving to a conference that is by far the best in the sport, on one of the premiere teams, is a job that every head coach in the country dreams of.
We’re still a long way from any of this possibly taking place. Hoke still hasn’t faced Ohio State. Harbaugh is still thinking of a Super Bowl by the bay, Miles is still eating grass in Death Valley and Fisher is in the middle of a title defense. For now, as we are heading down the final stretch of the season, there’s a lot to think about.
