The Kentucky Wildcats will finish their regular season on Saturday by facing their arch rivals, the Louisville Cardinals, in the Derby City.
It’s been a roller coaster of a season for the Wildcats. Kentucky raced out of the gates, winning five of six to start the season, including an upset win over the South Carolina Gamecocks.
However, the Wildcats’ schedule was heavily back-loaded, and the last five games have been very tough. In fact, Kentucky has been outscored 219-91 during its current five-game losing streak. Giving up nearly 44 points per game will get you beat in any league, and especially in the super-tough SEC.
After getting off to such a great start, the Kentucky program had a lot of momentum. This was a program that had won four games over the last two years combined. Getting to five wins was huge for Mark Stoops and the Big Blue Nation. It seemed that a trip to the postseason, the first such trip in four years, was inevitable. But facing the meat of the schedule has proven to be too much for the young ‘Cats.
Kentucky will be a heavy underdog against Louisville, a team that went to South Bend and beat the Notre Dame Fighting Irish last Saturday. However, the Kentucky team and its fans need to focus on the positives from this season. In other words, look at the season as a whole, rather than how it finished. Many Wildcat fans would have been happy with five wins at the beginning of the season, and that’s where Kentucky is likely to finish the 2014 campaign.
