While this game might be an in-state rivalry, it has been more of a mismatch recently as the Kansas State Wildcats have won 17 of the past 21 games of the Governor’s Cup series. The Kansas Jayhawks do, however, lead the all-time series at 64-42-5, but this year won’t help the Jayhawks extend that lead, but most likely help the Wildcats inch closer.
Kansas State has become one of the most consistently solid offenses in the nation behind dual-threat senior QB, Jake Waters. The veteran starter has been effective, passing for 2,569 yards, 14 touchdowns and five interceptions while completing 64 percent of his passes. Waters is also second on the team with 419 yards and seven touchdowns while Charles Jones leads the team with just 434 yards and 11 rushing scores. The passing game has been far more impressive, however, as Tyler Lockett has been as dynamic as any wide out in the nation, catching 70 passes for 1,074 yards and six touchdowns. Don’t sleep on Curry Sexton, either, as the wide out is second on the team with 799 yards and four touchdowns on 58 receptions.
Junior quarterback Michael Cummings has taken over for the previous starter Montell Cozart who began the team who had begun the year as the team’s quarterback under center. Cummings has passed for 1,576 yards, seven touchdowns and four interceptions while completing well under 60 percent of his passes. Jimmay Mundine has been Cummings’ favorite target, catching 43 passes for 564 yards and three touchdowns while Nigel King is second on the team with 29 catches for 525 yards and a score of his own. Nick Harwell has also been a force in the receiving game, grabbing 41 passes for 429 yards and a team-high four touchdowns. Corey Avery is the feature back in the run game, accounting for just 603 yards and five touchdowns.
Defensively, the Jayhawks have done nothing to aid their 3-8 record this season. Kansas has the 96th-ranked scoring defense as well as the 106th-ranked total defense. For those of you who don’t know, that’s not good — not good at all. Kansas State has fared much better, boasting the 24th-best scoring defense and 36th-best total defense in the nation.
Kansas will travel to Kansas State to take on the Wildcats at 4 p.m. EST on Saturday, Nov. 29. The game will be broadcasted on FOX Sports 1.
