Not many people saw the TCU Horned Frogs playing for a chance to make the first ever College Football Playoff this season after beginning the year unranked. After some big wins against ranked opponents and six victories in a row, the Horned Frogs look destined to be in the final four. The Iowa State Cyclones, on the other hand, are looking to play the role of major spoiler as they are just 2-9 on the year.
Trevone Boykin has become one of the nation’s best quarterbacks after reclaiming his job as the team’s starter following Casey Pachall‘s departure this offseason. The junior quarterback has really come into his own, leading TCU to be one of the nation’s best offenses with both his arm and his legs. Boykin has passed for 3,254 yards, 26 touchdowns and six interceptions this year while also running for another 598 yards and eight touchdowns. The QB trails only the surging Aaron Green in the run game who has come on as of late with 750 yards and seven touchdowns on 7.7 yards per carry. Josh Doctson has been Boykin’s favorite target this season, catching 50 passes for 808 yards and eight touchdowns followed by Kolby Listenbee‘s 36 receptions for 653 yards and three scores.
Iowa State’s pass offense has improved drastically from a season ago as Sam B. Richardson has proven to be one of the most impressive turnarounds in college football — he has nearly doubled his numbers from last year. Richardson has passed for 2,517 yards, 18 touchdowns and eight interceptions while it’s obvious he is not the problem for the two-win Cyclones. Allen Lazard has been his top target, catching 43 passes for 577 yards and three touchdowns while E.J. Bibbs leads the team in receptions, 45, as well as touchdowns, eight, to go along with 382 receiving yards. The run game has been a bit lethargic as Richardson is second on the team with 435 yards and three scores behind Aaron Wimberly‘s 567 yards and seven touchdowns.
Defensively, the Cyclones are one of the worst units in the nation. Iowa State’s defense has held them back all year as it ranks 115th in points allowed and 123rd in total yards surrendered per game. The Horned Frogs have been much better, but are still not considered elite on this side of the ball. The Horned Frogs rank 46th in total yards allowed and 26th in points allowed per week this year.
Iowa State will travel to TCU to take on the Horned Frogs at 12 p.m. EST on Saturday, Dec. 6. The game will be broadcasted on ABC.
PREDICTION: Iowa State 17, TCU 42
