After a red-hot 5-0 start to the season, the Texas A&M Aggies found a way to blow a chance at a playoff berth with a 2-5 record in their final seven games of the season. The same fate hit the West Virginia Mountaineers after a 6-2 start to the year, the team from the Big 12 ended the campaign with a 1-3 mark.
West Virginia found a way to become one of the nation’s premier passing teams with the help and guidance of senior quarterback Clint Trickett. The second-year starter had the season of his life, passing for 3,285 yards, 18 touchdowns and 10 interceptions with a 67 percent completion rate even while missing a game at the end of the year. Trickett’s favorite target all season long was easily Kevin White who led the team with 1,318 yards and nine touchdowns on 102 catches followed by Mario Alford‘s 888 yards and 10 touchdown catches on 62 receptions. Sophomore running back Rushel Shell led all rushers with 766 yards and seven touchdowns on 4.6 yards per carry.
Since suspending former Heisman threat Kenny Hill, the Aggies are 2-2 and relying on freshman quarterback Kyle Allen to get the job done through the air. Before his suspension, Hill had passed for 2,649 yards, 23 touchdowns and eight interceptions, but Allen has also been solid, throwing for 1,028 yards, 12 touchdowns and six picks. Josh Reynolds has been the favorite target of both quarterbacks, leading the team with 47 catches for 762 yards and an impressive 12 touchdown catches. Trey Williams and Tra Carson lead the mediocre rushing attack with a combined 922 yards and 11 touchdowns on 169 carries.
Defensively, the Mountaineers have been a middle-of-the-pack unit this season, ranking 61st in points allowed and 60th in total yards allowed per contest. Texas A&M has struggled this season, ranking 71st in points allowed and just 104th in total yards surrendered per game this season.
