For years, East Lansing, Mich., has been home to one of the best defenses in the entire nation as the Michigan State Spartans reigned supreme in the Big Ten on that side of the ball. The eleven men who defensive coordinator Pat Narduzzi put on the field at one time dominated opposing offenses game after game.
That era of football under Narduzzi is over at Michigan State for now as the Pittsburgh Panthers have hired the top coordinator as their next head coach — a position that had shuffled through four guys in a short period of time.
What does this mean for the Panthers?
Well, they just hit a home run in the coaching carousel that has been the 2014-15 offseason. While the Panthers still have one game remaining, the Armed Forces Bowl on Jan. 2, Narduzzi will assume the duties of head coach immediately following the bowl.
If there was any coach who has no head coach experience that is as close to a sure thing, it’s Narduzzi. Division I schools have been chasing after the defensive mastermind for years and it had taken a lot for the highly-paid coordinator (about $900,000 per year) to turn down offers from other schools to be the head coach, but this seems to be the perfect offer.
Colorado State had inquired about him, but he reportedly showed no interest after finding out Pittsburgh was interested in pursuing him. This hire was great for both parties as the Panthers will likely win their third conference title ever in his tenure and they will finally find themselves contending for titles left and right.
Narduzzi will change the culture at Pittsburgh — that is a promise.
