The Scarlet Knights of Rutgers got off to a quick and impressive start against the North Carolina Tar Heels in the Quick Lane Bowl Friday, shutting them out 23-0 in the first half. The Heels did find their offense in the second half, but just couldn’t complete the comeback, falling to the Scarlet Knights 40-21.
QB Gary Nova, who has displayed plenty of inconsistency throwing the football this year, took care of the football and the running game exploded for a total of 340 yards and three touchdowns. Freshmen RBs Josh Hicks and Robert Martin provided the Knights with the majority of those yards — Hicks with 202 and Martin with 100.
The Tar Heels couldn’t get anything going in the first half of the game. They scored a touchdown early in the second half, but just couldn’t keep up with the Scarlet Knights’ high-powered offense. They even recovered two onside kicks in the fourth quarter, but it was too little too late. They simply fell too far behind too early in the game.
This was Rutgers’ first year in the Big 10, a conference that many critics thought they wouldn’t excel in. But the Scarlet Knights stuck to their gameplan all year and got some key conference wins to end the regular season with a 7-5 record, and entered their ninth bowl game in 10 years.
This Rutgers football program has made huge strides in the past decade and their acceptance into the Big Ten conference this year is a testament to that. This Quick Lane Bowl win puts a cap on a season that the Scarlet Knights should be proud of.
