ACC Atrocious Through First Six Bowl Games

Forget the New Year’s Six and next time just focus on your first six bowls, okay ACC? Through Dec. 29, you have fought with futility, and your four losses against just two wins are an embarrassing start to the 2014-15 Bowl Season.

The Boston College Eagles squandered a gimme game to the Penn State Nittany Lions, initially surrendering a 14-point lead, and then shanking an extra point in overtime to courteously allow Penn State to claim their upset.

Then we had the Duke Blue Devils, who had their bowl under control until permitting the Arizona State Sun Devils to return a late fourth quarter kickoff to within a chinstrap of the goal line. The North Carolina Tar Heels were one of the few teams to beat Duke in 2014, but they apparently couldn’t handle the Rutgers Scarlet Knights. The Big Ten annexation from New Jersey beat the Tar Heels by a secure 19-point buffer.

Virginia Tech Hokies, you surprised me, but then again, I shouldn’t be surprised, all you do is beat ranked opponents. The Miami Hurricanes, on the other hand, were a sleeper expected to surprise, but proved to still be a year off, dropping a close game in a tough draw to the South Carolina Gamecocks of the SEC.

The North Carolina State Wolfpack played level with their expectations, and are thus far the second ACC team that shouldn’t be required to hang their heads.

On the Sunday of reprieve in which the NFL takes back control of the television, college football fans are allowed a breather before the stretch run of bowls 19 through 39 — five of which bear ACC representation. It’s not too late for the ACC to turn 2-4 around in the back end, but if this trend matures into an outcome, then it’s another season of lurking in the shadows of the Power 5.
