What gift do you give the redshirt sophomore who appears to have everything? A shot at the NFL. Jimbo Fisher has groomed Jameis Winston for this day since Winston joined the Florida State Seminoles in 2012.
ESPN has reported that Winston will declare early for the NFL Draft. Gauging his judgment off the field in the past year, this is Winston’s best decision thus far. He’s spent two seasons commanding a pro-style offense, experiencing the thrill of winning it all and the agony of coming up just short. Winston has targeted NFL-caliber receiving weapons, and he has battled through plagues of inconceivable drops and mental errors. He is ready.
Winston has the size, arm strength, and believe it or not, the mental fortitude to succeed in the NFL. Talent gets you to the door, but being able to read NFL defenses at warp speed keeps you in the room. Winston can accomplish the latter.
Winston may be the most pro-ready quarterback coming out too, unless Marcus Mariota can somehow gracefully land with the Philadelphia Eagles and renew the lease on the up-tempo offense he’s piloted for three years.
Look for Winston to be a top-five draft pick. NFL personnel evaluators will investigate his character to the point of undue dissection, but the still possibly misunderstood Winston will prevail. He’ll be as coached on charisma as he was on arm angle and footwork, and he will be starting somewhere on the second Sunday in September.
