It was no coincidence that Jay-Z penned ‘the Takeover’ in 2001. Maybe it was more than just a song aimed at his musical foes; maybe it was a bit of foreshadowing about the athletic empire he would be in the midst of building over a decade later. And no, “empire” is not too strong of a word.
Already boasting some of the biggest names in sports on its roster of clients, Roc Nation Sports made Georgia running back Todd Gurley the latest member of the team. After being an early preseason lock to earn a trip to the Heisman Trophy ceremony and rushing for 911 yards and six touchdowns — in six games — the 6-foot-1 running back suffered a four-game suspension for a bogus NCAA violation. Even worse, he suffered a season-ending ACL injury in his first game back.
However, NFL Draft experts still project the runner with 3,285 career yards to be a late-first round to early-second-round pick. This sets up Roc Nation to add another impact player to its selective roster.
And to think people thought Jay-Z was making the wrong move by getting out of the Brooklyn Nets business. I guess he bet on the right team after all — team Takeover. It’s only be a matter of time before prospects like Gurley validates that.
