What an odd banner year for the Big Ten.
In Week 2, they were dubbed the worst conference in the country as the Ohio State Buckeyes were humiliated by the Virginia Tech Hokies, while the Michigan State Spartans were thrashed by the Oregon Ducks. Yet, here we are in January, and the Spartans are the Cotton Bowl champions. The Buckeyes? They are the national champions.
Is there something shifty going on in Arlington?
Thank your local supreme deity for the College Football Playoff. It was unbelievable. If we were still in the BCS era, we would’ve seen two ousted teams (the Alabama Crimson Tide and Florida State Seminoles) contending in boring fisticuffs on national television, and most of us would’ve been rewatching the Golden Globes before halftime.
Ohio State just proved the committee capable, and exercised the power of tenacity and teamwork over on-paper talent and hype. What they did to Oregon was a demolition, even though the Buckeyes were so gentlemanly about it, giving Oregon the ball on four separate occasions just to be the sporting type.
Ohio State was an underdog team from an underdog conference, having to beat the top two to become No. 1. Then again, this is why fans watch the games so closely and in such growing numbers.
Everything boils down to the human qualities, imperfections and resolve. Anything that can happen will happen, and anything you never thought would happen eventually will.
