Mark Stoops Experiencing First Tough Times with Kentucky Wildcats

The first two years of the Mark Stoops Era as head coach of the Kentucky Wildcats have been relatively good. There hasn’t been a lot of winning on the field (7-17 overall), but Stoops and his staff have the fan base excited and have done an un-Kentucky-like job in recruiting. That means, Kentucky has found itself locked in recruiting battles with some of college football’s biggest names instead of with MAC schools.

However, Stoops is approaching year three of his time in Lexington and the wheels seem to be coming off of the momentum wagon. Tuesday alone was a terrible day for the Kentucky program. Four-star recruits Andrew Dowell and his twin brother David Dowell flipped their commitments from Kentucky to the Michigan State Spartans. That’s three players in the last week who have backed off Kentucky in favor of another school.

As if that wasn’t bad enough, news broke on Tuesday night of an alleged incident involving three Kentucky football players involved in a bar fight. The details are still sketchy at this time, but there are a couple of big names floating around as potential suspects in an alleged assault. This could not have made Stoops happy.

Kentucky football is never likely to compete for the SEC championship on a consistent basis. But if a coach can win between six and eight games per season, go to bowl games more often than not, run a clean program and have quality human beings as players, he would be hailed as a saint in the Bluegrass. What Kentucky fans don’t want is a program that’s as bad off the field as it is on it.

This latest incident, if true, could significantly hurt Stoops’ momentum heading into year three. This will be the season where fans will start to expect more and if this offseason is any indication, Kentucky may continue to struggle on the field as well.
