The Alabama Crimson Tide are set to be more loaded than a bar special of chili-cheese nachos. The Tide hold the top spot in the ESPN 300 recruiting class rankings, and if they come out on top on National Signing Day, it’ll be their fourth year in a row as college football’s leader in replenishing talent.
It’s barely disputable that Alabama is able to reload skilled players to meet their demands and high standards, but restocking skill positions with experienced and capable players is what separates a championship year from a championship drought. You can hide certain flaws through scheme and system, but you can’t camouflage an inept quarterback — even at Alabama.
Blake Sims leaves the Crimson Tide with an inexperienced slew of signal callers for 2015. Jake Coker and Alec Morris lead the latest depth chart, but neither have any bona fide college football experience. Signing the 2014 Elite 11 camp MVP Blake Barnett is great for the future, but Alabama desperately needs someone to step up in the present.
Four straight No. 1 recruiting classes, but two consecutive years of not finding a suitable replacement to A.J. McCarron is not acceptable Alabama football. Crimson Tide diehards can hope Nick Saban’s recruiting magic has landed this defensive coach an offensive phenom. However, hope clashes strong against the intensified emphasis on “body of work” in the College Football Playoff era. Solidifying this glaring deficiency is the only way Alabama can truly exert the power of their personnel.
If Barnett from Corona, California is to be Alabama’s most recent and relevant savior, then he will have to prove he is the man right away. If not, then Saban has to review his arsenal and find the one QB who at least keeps the Tide on course — and avoids throwing away the season when he should’ve just thrown the ball away.
