The Arizona State Sun Devils wrapped up their spring practices this past Tuesday. True sophomore Kalen Ballage has easily been the standout for coach Todd Graham’s revamped regime.
Ballage is entering his sophomore season at a whopping 222-pounds. His massive 6-foot-3 frame easily makes him one of the largest backs in the country and a force to be reckoned with. He has instant stopping power. He also possesses nimbleness and ball skills that would be unexpected for his size.
It’s hard to imagine a player of his stature following up a power run down the middle by stopping on a dime and leaving defenders twisted in the turf behind him. Ballage showed several flashes of such plays this spring. His physicality can’t be matched. He’s the type of player that can fight for a first down after bouncing off several backfield hits.
Currently, Ballage is slated behind fellow sophomore running back Demario Richard. This is the 1-2 punch the Devils will need to help quarterback Mike Bercovici and a receiving corps. currently lacking a big-time playmaker. Both backs can run over defenders or break ankles on a transition.
Penciled in as the No. 2 back on offense, Ballage’s athleticism is forcing Graham to find ways of keeping him on the field. Along with performing at a high-level on offense, Ballage has emerged one of the team’s top pass-rushers this spring. He is likely taking over the “devilbacker” (a linebacker/defensive end hybrid) role on third downs. His explosiveness off the edge and towering wingspan make him a menace for opposing quarterbacks.
With senior Marcus Hardison moving onto the NFL, the Devils will look to Ballage to lead the team’s pass-rush.
Further, Ballage looks to play on all sides of the ball as he continues to welcome his role as a kick returner, a role he will be renewing from last year.
With an offense likely to lean on the running game, and a defense that sent its best rusher to the NLF, Ballage is emerging as the top weapon in the fully-loaded offense.
