The story of spring practice for the LSU Tigers has been the battle for the starting quarterback spot. Brandon Harris and Anthony Jennings have engaged in a competition for the spot that will apparently carry into fall practice.

In Saturday’s spring game, both quarterbacks played well. Jennings was 13-of-20 through the air for 242 yards and two touchdowns. Harris was 11-of-17 passing for 178 yards, with two scores and the game’s only interception.

Head coach Les Miles was not ready to name a starter after the spring game, saying he would let the situation play itself out in the fall. However, Miles did seem more confident in his two candidates for the job than he did this time last year.

The choice for LSU comes down to a simple conclusion. If the Tigers want the quarterback who will make fewer mistakes, but will be less productive overall, they should choose Jennings. If they want the quarterback with the ability to make big plays, both with his arm and his legs, it’s Harris. But Harris is also more likely to turn the ball over due to his propensity for taking chances in the passing game.

It’s a tough call to make for Miles and offensive coordinator Cam Cameron. If they choose Jennings, they must cut back the playbook because he’s not able to make all of the throws that Cameron would like in the offense. If they choose Harris, they know he can make the throws, but he also might throw into double coverage and turn the ball over.

There’s always the option to play both quarterbacks, which LSU did some last season. Miles and Cameron hope that one player will take control of the job, but that still hasn’t happened at this point.
