In addition to bringing on a new coaching staff this offseason, the Nebraska Cornhuskers have been dealing with the prospect of replacing three-year starting running back Ameer Abdullah for 2015. The running back position is crucial to the success of Nebraska’s offense, even as Mike Riley installs his pro-style attack, so finding a replacement for Abdullah’s elite production will be a major part of their 2015 fortunes.
Enter Terrell Newby who should explode onto the scene as a junior this fall.
Last season, Newby saw limited action behind Abdullah, who was an absolute workhorse for the Husker offense. Despite his limited touches, he was productive, accounting for 297 yards on 67 carries (4.43 ypc) with five touchdowns in addition to eight receptions for 45 yards. He even saw some action on special teams, returning a few kickoffs, averaging 17.67 yards per return.
It’s that versatility that makes him a perfect candidate for a breakout season in 2015. Riley loves running backs that can do it all and Newby has shown himself capable of wearing a lot of hats in this Nebraska offense. Whether he’s running between the tackles, pass-blocking, or catching passes out of the backfield, his blend of athleticism and playmaking him an ideal fit for what the Huskers will be doing next season.
Now, he’s not likely to hold a monopoly of the carries like Abdullah did during his time in Lincoln. With big-bodied Imani Cross still in the mix, Nebraska will likely see some sort of split in the running game. But while Cross has the muscle to take some of the short-yardage and goal-line carries, Newby has the explosiveness to break out as the star of the Husker offense next season.
Nebraska has enjoyed a 1,000-yard running back in each of the last six seasons. While they will undoubtedly miss the contributions or Abdullah out of the backfield, that streak should be kept alive by Terrell Newby’s arrival as one of the premier rushers in the Big Ten for 2015.
