The Texas A&M Aggies are entering their fourth season in the SEC. The Aggies have amassed a record of 28-11 over the course of the past three years under Kevin Sumlin. Sumlin’s charisma and personality have brought in fantastic recruits and an outpouring of donations from alumni into the program. The Aggies boast one of the nation’s strongest fan bases, great in-state recruiting, and elite facilities.
The Aggies took college football by storm in 2012. They went 11-2 and vastly surpassed expectations during their first year as a member of the SEC. The 2012 roster possessed a nice blend of offensive talent, experience and of course Johnny Manziel. The Aggies finished the season ninth in total defense in the SEC. This is a little misleading as the team allowed only 21.8 points per game. The defense was an experienced group that could rush the passer. The Aggies intercepted 12 passes and improved as the season progressed.
Unfortunately, Texas A&M regressed defensively following 2012 and has struggled with the the SEC’s worst total defense for consecutive seasons. The Aggies forced only 13 turnovers last season. They have struggled due to youth in their front seven and a weak defensive strategy. There have been many times when the Aggies have looked unprepared defensively against both SEC foes and lesser opponents.
It is remarkable to think that Texas A&M has succeeded with a defense that so rarely makes plays. The Aggies finished 107th in the country last season in turnover margin, turning the ball over 20 times and forcing only 13 turnovers. Despite these disappointing numbers, they won eight games in 2014.
The Aggies have succeeded with no help from its defense the last two years. That might change in 2015. The Aggies added John Chavis to their coaching staff. Chavis is one of the most successful defensive coordinators in college football and could work wonders for the team. Chavis had spent the majority of his career with the Tennessee Volunteers and LSU Tigers. Chavis has been a maestro developing defensive talent and having success in the SEC.
In fact, Chavis consistently developed schemes to thwart Texas A&M’s potent offense over the past three seasons.
Texas A&M returns 15 starters entering 2015. The defense returns a collection of young, talented players who Chavis will look to mold into the core of his defense. The Aggies’ Myles Garrett broke several records during his freshman season. Entering his sophomore year, Garrett looks improve upon the 11.5 sacks he posted last season. Garrett has All-American ability and will be Chavis’ primary weapon next year.
Chavis and Texas A&M strike many as the perfect match. Texas A&M has been an offensive juggernaut under Kevin Sumlin. John Chavis was never able to call a game as aggressively as he would like due to LSU’s offensive struggles. The resulting combination could be just what each side has always dreamed of. Texas A&M might finally be able to stop its opponents and Chavis will finally have an offense capable of providing him with a lead.
