The Kenny Hill era came and went quickly for the Texas A&M Aggies, almost too quickly. Now Aggie fans see him as the ex-boyfriend that you just knew was a mistake after you broke up with him. But now Texas A&M has a new boyfriend — or quarterback, I should say.
Kyle Allen finished his freshman season with a 3-2 record, including wins against N0. 3 ranked Auburn and a win in the Liberty Bowl over West Virginia. Over the course of the offseason Allen has gotten more in control of who he is as a Texas A&M starting quarterback. Some would say that he even might be on the way to a Heisman Trophy, but others would say that’s crazy.
After Johnny Manziel and Hill, Allen is definitely a breath of fresh air to the QB role. The speed and willingness to run from the pocket isn’t really there, but he’s a much more skilled passer than both former Aggie players. His stats for 2014 are simply mind blowing for a freshman coming in under pressure. He finished his year with 1,322 yards, 16 touchdowns and a QB rating of 139.5.
After Hill’s departure from College Station, Allen will not really have any competition to worry about going into the fall. This has given him more focus on reps going into spring. Expect Allen to be calm, cool and collected going into every game this fall. Plus, essentially the Aggies have their toughest matchups in their home stadium, so the whole squad will at least have a little comfort.
Of course I should mention the talent that Allen will have to throw to. Texas A&M has one of the, if not the best wide receiving corps in the nation. Allen will virtually not run out of targets to find. Josh Reynolds, Speedy Noil and Ricky Seals-Jones will all be returning in 2015. Reynolds broke a school record last season with 13 touchdowns.
Other players that Aggie fans are excited about are five-star WR recruit Christian Kirk, four-star tight end Jordan Davis and four-star WR Kemah Siverand. With the depth that A&M has in 2015, there is no reason why Allen won’t be successful. I don’t think that it’s a Heisman year for him just yet, but this year will bring some insight on if he will ever be that kind of player.
