Like most of the SEC, it is really unclear on who will shine and who will fall.
Arkansas is looking to have a spectacular year after finishing last season off with a bang. The Razorbacks’ troubles in the past have been finding the decent quarterback in Brandon Allen. In 2013, Bret Bielema was in his first year as the head coach and Allen started his first games for the hogs. Arkansas started off 2013 with three straight wins and finished with nine straight losses. Times were tough in Fayetteville after the 2013 season, which resulted in an angry fan burning Allen’s truck.
Allen had all of the pressure going into 2014. Not only could he possibly lose another truck if the season went bad, he could lose a starting job. Arkansas opened the season at Auburn and lost 45-21 after being tied at halftime. Even in the losses, Arkansas showed that it was a team that shouldn’t be taken lightly. After one-touchdown losses to No. 5 Alabama, No. 6 Texas A&M and No. 1 Mississippi State, a new perspective was taken on the Hogs. The country could see that the storm was coming in the SEC West, and that it would soon be raining Razorbacks.
With the quick improvement of Arkansas as a squad, an improvement was also seen in Brandon Allen. Though it was still not perfect, Allen had proven to fans that he was earning his right to be an SEC quarterback. Allen finished 2014 with 2,285 yards, 20 touchdowns and only five interceptions, the second least in the conference amongst SEC starters. He is a big reason why Hog fans are excited for the 2015 season.
The biggest and most recent shock of excitement came a few months ago in the Razorbacks’ spring game. Allen completed 17 of his 21 passes for three touchdowns (all in the first half). These stats don’t even compete with his past spring games, or even his regular games. And with the hiring of new offensive coordinator Dan Enos, Allen is sure to get a lot of new insight and helpful tips that will make his game one of the best in the conference.
In a conference where the quarterback talent is through the roof, Brandon Allen will most definitely be included in that talent pool in 2015.
