The Arkansas Razorbacks were better than expected in 2014. After a 3-9 campaign the season before, the Hogs surged to 7-6 last year in the second year of the Bret Bielema Era in Fayetteville.
Arkansas has adopted the style of play that was wildly successful for Bielema when he coached the Wisconsin Badgers. The Razorbacks run the ball early and often, pounding the opposition and controlling the clock. And with running backs Alex Collins and Jonathan Williams, the Hogs had a potent one-two combination in the backfield.
Many experts think that Arkansas could take another step forward this season. And while that might be the case, it won’t be easy for a couple of reasons. First, Arkansas is not going to sneak up on anyone this season. While they may have been taken lightly by some opponents in 2014, those same opponents will know what’s coming this season.
Second, the schedule is daunting once again this season. Arkansas has road games against the Tennessee Volunteers, the Alabama Crimson Tide, the Ole Miss Rebels and the LSU Tigers. Arkansas also has home contests against the Texas A&M Aggies, the Auburn Tigers and the Mississippi State Bulldogs. Each of those teams will be formidable opponents for Bielema and his squad.
Bielema believes in his system and he made it work for him in the mighty SEC last season. If he can continue to get his team to improve, they could be in the mix for the SEC Western Division title sooner rather than later. But they certainly won’t sneak up on anyone this season.
