The Texas A&M Aggies had a decent season in 2014. But decent seasons don’t get it done in College Station. After thriving during the Johnny Manziel years, A&M fell back to reality last season. After winning their first five games, the Aggies stumbled to an 8-5 season.
Offense was not the problem for the Aggies, but defense was. Head coach Kevin Sumlin hired John Chavis to fix the defense in College Station, and Chavis is likely to get that done. He has been the architect of great defenses with the Tennessee Volunteers and the LSU Tigers prior to his arrival in College Station.
But the 2015 season could be a bounce back year for the Aggies for another reason that may be overlooked. Sumlin’s team faces only three true road games this season, while they play seven games at home and two at neutral sites.
Even better news for A&M is that the best opponents on their schedule must visit Kyle Field. Both the Alabama Crimson Tide and the Auburn Tigers will play in Texas this season. A&M faces the Arkansas Razorbacks at a neutral site in Arlington, Texas.
A&M does visit the Ole Miss Rebels and the LSU Tigers, but their other true road game is a winnable contest when the Aggies visit the Vanderbilt Commodores.
This is the type of schedule that could allow the Aggies to remain in the race for the SEC Western Division title longer than they might have otherwise. And when the schedule makers present a team with a gift like this, they cannot afford to not take advantage of it.
