This week, the No. 13 UCLA Bruins take on the UNLV Rebels in what should be a blowout win for the Pac-12 heavyweights. Many see the Rebels as one of the worst college football teams in the nation, so this should be a cakewalk for UCLA after a dominant win in Week 1 against the Virginia Cavaliers.
The spotlight will be on freshman quarterback Josh Rosen, who starred in his first college football action for the Bruins. Playing against a formidable opponent in the Cavaliers, the SoCal native looked like a seasoned veteran, completing 28 of his 35 passes for 351 yards and three touchdowns. Although it wasn’t quite up to Jameis Winston’s standards in terms of debuts, it was certainly something to behold.
With his first game under his belt, look for Rosen to stay hot against a Rebels defense that gave up 38 points and 360 yards through the air in a Week 1 loss to Southern Illinois.
UCLA will also be looking to get the ground game going after a disappointing effort in Week 1. Although Soso Jamabo and Paul Perkins played well, the Bruins averaged only 4.5 yards per carry. That number must improve if the Bruins plan on being true contenders in the Pac-12. Luckily, it shouldn’t be too difficult to gain some momentum against a porous UNLV defense.
As for the Rebels, the only player worth watching is strong safety Peni Vea. The senior showed well against the Salukis in Week 1 with nine tackles, one sack and a forced fumble, and should make a number of big plays against the Bruins.
As much as they’d like to believe they can put up a fight, the Rebels don’t stand a chance in this one. UCLA will come to town and make minced meat of the UNLV defense, with another outstanding performance from Rosen likely on the agenda.
Prediction: UCLA 41, UNLV 6
