The Purdue Boilermakers decided to start redshirt freshman quarterback David Blough this afternoon against the Bowling Green Falcons. It was a move that had to be made after the terrible start that Austin Appleby had for the Boilermakers.
Head coach Darrell Hazell was very confident in his young quarterback and thought that he had a chance to lead the Boilermakers to a victory this afternoon. Unfortunately, the victory didn’t end up happening as Bowling Green was able to defeat Purdue by a final score of 35-28. It was a tough game in which Purdue played very well, but two missed field goals and a few key mistakes hurt them in a big way.
Despite the loss, Blough looked like a star and showed quite a bit of star potential for the future of the Purdue football program.
Blough ended up completing 29 of his 39 pass attempts for 340 yards, two touchdowns and an interception. His interception came on the last offensive play for Purdue and really wasn’t his fault. This game was an excellent way to start his college football career as a starter and there is no question that he did enough to keep his starting job looking ahead to Week 5 of the season.
Perhaps the most pleasant surprise for the Boilermakers was the leadership and command that Blough showed. It is easy for a young quarterback to start off without much of a voice on the field, but that wasn’t the case with Blough. He was very vocal and exhibited excellent leadership on each and every drive and made quite a few very tough passes against a solid defense.
Purdue hasn’t had a legitimate starting quarterback for a long time and Blough could be the guy to fix that. He has been compared to former Purdue legend Drew Brees since committing to the program and there is no question that he has some similarities to Brees. Blough is a hard worker as well, which should boost his coaching staff’s hope of him reaching his full potential.
Moving forward into the rest of the season, the Boilermakers need to continue allowing Blough to run the offense. He showed that his arm is both strong and accurate and with more experience he will simply continue improving and getting better.
Even though they dropped to 1-3 on the season with the loss, Purdue has to be more happy than they have been all season long. It isn’t every day that a freshman quarterback comes into his first start and absolutely dominates the opposing defense. Blough’s performance gives Purdue hope for the future and it is obvious that the team is progressing in every single aspect as the season moves forward.
Expect to see Blough improve and continue developing into the potential star that he appeared to be today.
