Auburn has gotten off to one of the shakier starts in the SEC, and drastic decisions have been made. One of these decisions includes placing starting quarterback Jeremy Johnson on the bench. The front guy now for Auburn is redshirt freshman Sean White. The Auburn Tiger nation now looks at White to be their new leader to pick up the pace for the Tiger offense. However, this major decision will only be temporary.
All the madness for the Auburn season started in Week 2, where the Tigers barely escaped a 27-20 overtime victory over the non-intimidating Jacksonville State Gamecocks. This “victory” not only showed Auburn’s true colors, but also Jeremy Johnson’s true colors. Over Johnson’s first three starts, he tossed six interceptions and five touchdowns. That stat alone was concerning enough to take action. Coming into the season, Johnson was being looked at as a Heisman front-runner, but now those hopes are quickly dashed.
Sean White was named the official starter for the Week 4 game against Mississippi State. In White’s first start, he tossed for 188 yards, 29 rushing yards, and one interception. The Auburn defense was not able to put the ball into the end zone, which is what ultimately lost them the game. Although White kept his cool in his first start as a Tiger, his ability is nowhere near that of Jeremy Johnson. In recent past, we’ve been able to see Johnson as the backup of Nick Marshall. That Jeremy Johnson that we saw was an exciting guy to watch. Before this season, Johnson tossed nine touchdowns with just two interceptions for the Tigers. If only Johnson will get back on track to where he was before this season, he will start again.
And Johnson should get back to where he was. I’m not saying it’s going this week or the next, but Jeremy Johnson will be back on the field for the Tigers to start. This whole Sean White starting gig is all just one big wake up call for Jeremy Johnson; for the sake of the Auburn Tiger fanbase, it better work. This isn’t the Gus Malzahn Auburn we’re used to seeing on the field right now, and part of the damage control they’re working on is getting Jeremy Johnson into Auburn shape. Expect Johnson to be back on the field before the season is over, better than ever.
