Missouri’s 2015 season has started out extremely rough. With close wins against Arkansas State and Connecticut, the Tigers were starting to look like a lost cause. Then, after the loss to Kentucky in the conference opener, people were starting to wonder how this team had made it to the SEC championship the last two years. So, when news came out that star quarterback Maty Mauk was suspended due to disciplinary reasons, a loss in Week 5 was imminent.
But expectations were shattered. Missouri stayed together and pulled off a surprising 24-10 victory over the South Carolina Gamecocks, giving the Tigers their first conference win of the season. However, it wasn’t just a win that the Tigers received on Saturday. Mizzou showed the entire conference that they are still in it to win it for the SEC East, and that they can rely on freshman quarterback Drew Lock.
The freshman was called upon last week to start against the Gamecocks. Although Lock has gotten playing time in all of the games this season, this was his first start to his young career. Expectations were about as low as they could get coming from Mizzou and Gamecock fans. Yet, Lock finished the game with 136 yards passing and two passing touchdowns in the big win over South Carolina. With this win, Lock can now be seen as the go-to guy for Mizzou’s offense if ever in a dire situation. He’s a natural behind the center, and seeing that from a freshman will only lead to big things for his career.
As of right now, the starting job should be given to Lock just because he is putting points on the board more consistently than Maty Mauk. If Mauk continues to have a shaky season, the Tigers could very well call upon #3 to take the charge. Lock could potentially be a menace to the SEC in the near future if his talents pan out, so other teams need to be wary.
With a tough matchup against Florida next Saturday, it should be interesting to see who the Tigers choose to start at quarterback.
