Steve Spurrier Makes Shocking Decision to Retire From South Carolina

In a bit of shocking news, South Carolina head football coach Steve Spurrier has decided to retire, effective immediately according to FootballScoop.com.

Spurrier hasn’t given any indication recently that he was ready to hang it up which will lead to speculation that it’s possibly health related or maybe he couldn’t take the struggles of his current team. Either way, South Carolina is expected to name an interim coach at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday morning.

While the Gamecocks certainly weren’t expected to compete for the SEC title this season, Spurrier’s boys sit at 2-4 and with a tough schedule ahead of him, it seems “The Old Ball Coach” would rather step away than deal with more ugly losses.

Spurrier will leave College Football with a career record of 228-89-2, one National Championship, one ACC Championship while at Duke and six SEC Championships while with the Florida Gators. Other than a two-year hiatus as the head coach of the Washington Redskins, Spurrier’s career was rather magical. He will certainly go down as one of the best College Football coaches of all time.

It will be interesting to see if the Gamecocks allow Spurrier’s son, Steve Spurrier Jr.. to take over as head coach as he’s already on the staff as a co-offensive coordinator.
