All year long, Baylor wide receiver Corey Coleman has been one of the best receivers in college football. Unfortunately, the Bears’ go-to target has flown under the radar as most fans outside of Waco, TX, have failed to learn his name. It’s time for those folks to get with the program.
Here’s the main stat you need to know about Coleman, who has quickly asserted himself as quarterback Seth Russell‘s favorite receiver this season. Though six games, Coleman has already broken the Baylor single-season receiving touchdowns record with 13. Yes, through six games, he’s broken a single-season record at a position that the Bears have boasted some outstanding talents.
Coleman is the latest in a long line of extraordinary wide receivers for Baylor, with eventual NFL standouts such as Kendall Wright and Josh Gordon coming before him. That’s why it’s all the more impressive that he’s already written the record.
The stats are certainly impressive, but it’s about so much more than that for Coleman.
Based on what we’ve seen on the field, Coleman may be one of the most exciting athletes in all of college football. Not only does he possess excellent speed, but he’s also shown great leaping abilities, body control and hands. His natural abilities are evidenced by his knack for creating separation from defenders and picking up big yards after the catch, both necessities for someone of his size.
Although his size (listed at 5’11”, 190 pounds) isn’t overly impressive, the fact that he can make so many plays despite his stature makes him all the more worthy of recognition.
Some will say that Coleman’s gaudy numbers are based off of Baylor’s offensive scheme, which promotes lots of scoring and excessive stats in the passing game. However, while that may slightly inflate his numbers, there’s no denying Coleman has the talent to be categorized as a star for Baylor.
Either way, it’s time Coleman got some national recognition. While I’m not entirely sure he belongs in the Heisman Trophy conversation just yet, there’s no denying that the Bears’ top target deserves more respect than he’s getting right now.
Stay tuned to Baylor football, because Coleman is sure to pile on to his impressive stats before the 2015 campaign is over.
