Georgia’s college football programs are not having the greatest year — Georgia Tech has self-destructed and Georgia is struggling. One program, though, is quietly winning games and making a colossal first impression. The Kennesaw State Owls’ fledgling (sorry — couldn’t resist) program has been racking up victories and impressive stats.
The Owls seem poised to win the Big South Conference this year. KSU is 5-1 and their sole loss was to an undefeated out-of-conference Dayton team. KSU is second in the nation in rushing yards per game and tied for the FCS lead with 20 touchdowns on the ground. The receivers are averaging 25.2 yards per catch. The only other team with that stat in any division was Ohio University in 1997. They are converting almost 60 percent of their third downs, one of the highest in the FCS.
If KSU continues to play at this level they may be able to resuscitate the struggling Big South league. The most important member, Coastal Carolina, announced its defection to the FBS as of 2016. Detractors have argued that the conference is undemanding, but Kennesaw’s stats have made them equals with teams in any division.
Head coach Brian Bohannon has an impressive pedigree. He played at UGA and coached at Georgia Tech for five years before taking the helm at KSU in 2013. The team has sold out every home game this year which ensures that their opponents walk into an unwelcoming home environment. It takes years to establish an elite football program, yet if the Owls continue to play with this intensity they may become an exception. They are taking on the Big South and they are taking on college football. Either way, Kennesaw State may be the team to watch in Georgia this year.
