Miami (FL) Football Rumors: Ed Reed Interested in Head Coaching Job

This past weekend, the Miami Hurricanes were dismantled by the Clemson Tigers to the tune of a 58-0 shutout. It was the worst loss in the school’s history and led to a number of former Hurricanes calling for the firing of head coach Al Golden.

After initially claiming that there wouldn’t be any sort of coaching change on Saturday, athletic director Blake James had a change of heart — or allowed the pressure to get to him — and relieved Golden of his duties on Sunday.

While Miami is rich with tradition, it’s certainly not the same program it’s been in the past. The Hurricanes haven’t won a bowl game since 2006, and haven’t played in the National Championship game since 2004.

With the school in need of a big-name head coach to get the fan base and boosters excited again, an unlikely candidate has apparently thrown his name into the ring — former Baltimore Ravens safety, and Miami alum, Ed Reed.

Reed appeared on the Rich Eisen Show on Monday and had some interesting comments regarding the Hurricanes’ head coaching job:

“The NBA did it with Jason Kidd. I even thought about it,” Reed said. “They can put my name in the mix for a coaching job or something like that. It seems like the partnership between players and coaches, the head coach’s job is to manage everybody, manage the game, and help the offensive and defensive coordinators make the best decisions. And they help him do the same thing. I haven’t received a call from a 305 number. I would definitely listen, would go and talk and want to know what they’re looking to do. I would entertain it. I’m at a different place in my life right now, working out, training, coaching from afar, helping guys out, high school, college and pro alike. I definitely would entertain it.”

Typically, I would shoot this down as never going to happen, but Reed could actually be the type of guy that the Hurricanes need. While he obviously has no coaching experience whatsoever, he’s been described as a coach on the field and having one of the highest football IQs of any NFL player.

With him being a Miami grad, and having likely support from teammates and other NFL players, Reed could be an interesting name to keep an eye on in the Hurricanes’ search for a head coach.
