This should have been a great year for Arkansas. The Razorbacks should have easily capitalized on last season’s successes, including their first conference win since 2012 and two shutouts of ranked conference opponents in a row.
But the bad luck that has been plaguing the Razorbacks since Bobby Petrino crashed his motorcycle doesn’t seem to want to let up just yet. Despite entering the season with a rank in the AP Poll (18) and an easy Week 1 win against UTEP (48-13), Petrino’s legacy of bad luck caught up with the Razorbacks in Week 2.
Arkansas was stunned by Toledo (12-16) and then lost the next week to Texas Tech (24-35) before Razorback faithful had a chance to call the Toledo game a fluke. Not as shockingly, the Hogs were unable to outlast Texas A&M in Week 4 even after sending the game to overtime.
The Razorbacks were able to salvage part of their season with wins against Tennessee (24-20) and Auburn in a four-OT thriller (54-46). However, Arkansas barely showed up against Alabama, a team Ole Miss upset earlier this season in one of the most shocking games of 2015.
Despite an upset of Alabama in 2014, Ole Miss entered this year’s game a clear underdog. The Rebels hadn’t won in Tuscaloosa since 1988 and had never pulled off back-to-back wins against the Tide. But Ole Miss was ready to turn the tide and never trailed in this year’s game behind the impressive offensive antics of QB Chad Kelly and WR Laquon Treadwell.
Kelly has already thrown for 2,856 yards this season and even though Arkansas’ O-line is bigger than any other football team’s in America, the Razorback’s defense is ranked 128th in the FBS for yards allowed.
Ole Miss has already been upset once this season by an unranked opponent (Memphis) and likely won’t let it happen again. Not to mention that last season’s matchup between the two SEC teams ended in a 30-0 victory for the Razorbacks, so Ole Miss is out for blood this year.
The last time Arkansas won at Vaught-Hemingway? 2011. The coach? Bobby Petrino.
Prediction: Arkansas 21, Ole Miss 34
