Tuscaloosa, Alabama, is a place where dreams often go to die — at least in the college football world. However, in the case of LSU running back Leonard Fournette, the dream of becoming the 2015 Heisman Trophy winner could come to fruition in Tuscaloosa on Saturday, when the Tigers look to take hold of the SEC against the Alabama Crimson Tide.
So far this season, Fournette has quickly emerged as college football’s most dominant player. The former prep sensation has certainly lived up to the hype, victimizing opposing defenses on a regular basis while leading the Tigers to a 7-0 record. Based on what we’ve seen on the field, there’s little reason to believe he’s not the nation’s top overall talent.
However, some are still skeptical of Fournette having already sewn up the Heisman Trophy.
It’s easy to understand, especially considering there’s plenty of football left to be played. There have been a number of outstanding Heisman candidates this season, and although Fournette leads the charge, a lot can happen in a few weeks.
Fournette has already made quite the case this season — he’s amassed over 100 rushing yards in nine straight games, and leads the nation in rushing touchdowns with 15. He’s averaging 193 yards per game, and has broken the 200-yard barrier on three occasions this season. It’s safe to say he’s more than deserving, but still has more ground to cover.
Going to town on Alabama would be more than enough to get the job done.
Heading into Week 10, the Crimson Tide have the No. 3 rushing defense in the nation. They’re allowing only 78.5 yards per game, while holding opposing backs to 2.6 yards per carry. On the season, they’ve only allowed four touchdowns on the ground — Fournette has scored three in a game on three separate occasions.
So you can see why the Alabama defense will be a true test of where Fournette stands. If he can dominant the No. 3 defense in the nation and help the Tigers secure a much-needed SEC win, there’s no reason to believe voters won’t hand him the Heisman on a silver platter.
We’ll see what happens on Saturday, but chances are Fournette will wreck havoc on the Alabama defense. If that’s the case, we might as well not even have the Heisman Trophy ceremony — just write his name on it already.
