The College Football Playoff picture is still very murky, but the Oklahoma Sooners (yes, a Big 12 team) can now make one heck of a case for a spot in the playoff. Unfortunately, Baker Mayfield‘s dreams of winning the Heisman might have taken a slight hit in the Sooners’ monster victory over the TCU Horned Frogs.

Mayfield did not play in the second half due to an injury. As a result, he finished the game with just 127 passing yards and two touchdowns. He also had 42 rushing yards on the ground. Injury or not, stats are a very, very key ingredient for the Heisman. That said, people can certainly make the case that Mayfield’s value was on full display when he wasn’t in the game — because TCU almost pulled off the comeback.

Luckily for Mayfield, the Sooners will close out the regular season against the Oklahoma State Cowboys. If Oklahoma wins and if Mayfield has a masterful performance — assuming he plays — he could still win the ultimate individual award.

His injury is unfortunate for many reasons, but I will point out two football related ones for you: (1) His team needs him to win football games. (2) Mayfield could have pulled away from the Heisman pack if he had a big outing in Week 12.

Hopefully Mayfield is back on the field next week. If so, he has the perfect opportunity to win the Heisman. Of course, Oklahoma’s chances of beating the Cowboys will go way up as well, which could possibly lead to a spot in the playoff.
