The selection committee continues to befuddle me with their weekly selections. I expected Alabama and Clemson to remain in their respective top spots, yet I must question what on earth the College Football Playoff committee is thinking with the last two spots. Oklahoma at No. 3? How much did Bob Stoops pay them? It’s not that the Sooners are a bad football team — they aren’t, but they are woefully overranked. The only reason I can think of for this is that Oklahoma will bring in better ratings than some of the lower-rated teams.
Notre Dame lost to Clemson, which certainly looks far better than the Sooners’ early-season loss to an unranked Texas. They dropped to No. 6 in the rankings. The Irish don’t necessarily deserve their vaunted position, but they certainly look better on paper than Oklahoma.
Oklahoma jumped from No. 7 to No. 3 after barely beating a TCU team devoid of two of its best playmakers. QB Trevone Boykin and WR Josh Doctson were both out of last Saturday’s matchup due to injuries. Oh, and this is after the Sooners managed to blow a lead of 23-7. Say what?! Yes, they beat Baylor, but they struggled mightily against an unranked Tennessee team. I’m just not sure that the Sooners have the depth to play with the big boys this year.
Again, it’s not that Oklahoma is lacking talent, but there are other teams with more impressive resumes. On top of that, the Sooners are coming off an 8-5 year and the pass defense was in the bottom 10 in the country. Michigan State and Oklahoma State look better than Oklahoma at the moment.
My only consolation is that if they remain in the top four Alabama will spank them like a naughty stepchild.
