The Michigan State Spartans are ranked No. 5 in the College Football Playoff rankings. The Iowa Hawkeyes come in at No. 4. Therefore, one could come to the conclusion that the Big Ten championship is a play-in game for the playoff.
Iowa, of course, enters this game with a perfect record. Meanwhile, the Spartans have that one blemish against the Nebraska Cornhuskers … which is still kind of hard to believe.

That said, and as odd as it might sound, Michigan State enters this big-stage showdown with more momentum. That is because the Spartans knocked off the Ohio State Buckeyes on the road (without Connor Cook), and then followed up that upset by destroying the Penn State Nittany Lions by the score of 55-16. That Penn State win clinched a spot in the conference title game.
We have known for a little while that Iowa was going to be partaking in the Big Ten championship.
For all it’s worth, the Hawkeyes just don’t have as impressive of a resume as Michigan State, despite being undefeated. Iowa’s best wins came against the Wisconsin Badgers and Northwestern Wildcats. The Spartans’ best wins came against the Oregon Ducks, Michigan Wolverines and Ohio State. See the difference?
Surely, both teams have the goods to win a national title, but it is tough to go against Michigan State when you look at its resume compared to Iowa’s. Then again, the Hawkeyes did the only thing that mattered — knocked off every team on their schedule.
Nonetheless, Connor Cook is going to lead his team to victory this weekend, which will result in a cozy spot in the playoff being clinched.
