After it was announced that Arizona head coach Rich Rodriguez would be returning to the Wildcats instead of accepting their offer, the South Carolina Gamecocks have turned to Auburn defensive coordinator Will Muschamp to succeed the recently retired Steve Spurrier as the university’s next head football coach.

Muschamp spent one season at Auburn after spending four years at Florida as the Gators’ head coach. While at Florida, Muschamp compiled a 28-21 record, but only led the Gators to bowls in two of his four seasons before finally getting the ax at the end of the 2014 season.
As the Tigers’ defensive coordinator in 2015, Muschamp led the 91st-ranked total defense in college football as the unit gave up 422 yards and 27.3 points per game en route to a disappointing 6-6 season.
I’m a bit confused as to why the Gamecocks believe Muschamp is a positive hire. He had a much better opportunity at Florida, a school that typically dominates recruiting in the state and is loaded with four and five-star players, and he couldn’t get the job done their. Then he ends up at Auburn and does a terrible job with the defense, but yet ends up emerging as the second option behind Rodriguez for the Gamecocks’ top job?
Muschamp has done nothing to prove that he’s a qualified head coach and makes it seem as if South Carolina was just grasping at straws. If I’m a Gamecocks fan, I wake up this morning extremely discouraged about the future of the program.
