There are jobs that people work while they seek other jobs. There are jobs that people view as more of a destination. Being the football coach for the South Carolina Gamecocks just doesn’t seem to have that same lure that the traditional powers of college football seem to possess. The top coaching prospects have all landed somewhere else.
Mark Richt even decided to leave the mighty SEC to coach the Miami Hurricanes in an attempt to lead a once proud dynasty back to prominence. Most recently, the rumor mill swirled around Rich Rodriguez; but just like everyone else who was believed to be on South Carolina’s radar, Rodriguez didn’t even look in the Gamecocks’ direction.
So after the retirement of the most successful coach this program has ever seen, the Gamecock hopeful were expecting to see the next step taken; and instead they saw a step taken in the wrong direction. They had time to think this out. There should have been no rush; but it’s been said all along that this position would be filled in December. The next head coach of the Gamecocks will be Will Muschamp. He’s the 34th person to hold that position.
Muschamp struggled in his first stint as a head coach in the SEC. He was 28-21 and seemed to regress every single year. His teams struggled way too often, could never get the best out of the talent they recruited and even had a losing record to the Gamecocks (1-3). In 2015, Muschamp was the defensive coordinator of the Auburn Tigers. That didn’t go well either. The Tigers gave up close to 30 points a game and over 400 yards per contest.
Don’t expect the Gamecocks to win the SEC East any time soon.
