South Carolina Football Coach Will Muschamp Has Silenced Critics For Now

I bet if you’re a South Carolina Gamecocks fan you thought you’d never hear this, but the fans got a little spoiled during the Steve Spurrier era. Every year, the team seemed like they were doing something the program had never done before. It was the best of times. Then, something surprising happened. They opened the 2014 season on national television against the Texas A&M Aggies and got pushed all over the field like they were some junior varsity high school team. In a flash, their climb to elite status was over.

These days, it feels like the best run in the history of the Gamecocks was 15 years ago. The streak of 11-win seasons is gone. The winning streak over the Clemson Tigers has ended, and the balance of power in the state has shifted back to their rivals who are now enjoying a two-game winning streak of their own.

Two of the greatest football talents to wear the Gamecock colors and certainly the two best players on offense and defense these last two years, Pharoh Cooper and Skai Moore will be leaving to play on Sunday. The most loyal of fan has to be a tad bit disappointed that those two had to be showcased on bad teams.

Spurrier is gone now, and the Will Muschamp era is off and running. It hasn’t been the warmest of welcomes seeing as how Muschamp is probably better known now for temper tantrums on the sidelines and the way things ended with the Florida Gators than what he did when he first arrived in Gainesville.

He hasn’t wasted any time jumping right into his new job and has already landed some big name prospects that has this fanbase smiling a bit more than they did in 2015. He’s found a quarterback in Brandon McIlwain. If Connor Mitch can’t go or can’t get healthy, at least there’s another option. That alone is reason to be encouraged.

Don’t start booking reservations in Atlanta yet, but this may not be so bad after all.
