It had never happened before, but we all know it’s true because we saw it with our own eyes. From 2009 to 2013, the South Carolina Gamecocks did pretty much whatever they wanted to against their in-state rivals and held a five-game winning streak over the Clemson Tigers. The 21 games prior to that were evidence that this rivalry was completely becoming a second thought, as the Tigers went 16-5 in that span.

Well, the Gamecocks have fallen on hard times, and the last two meetings have seen the momentum swing back in favor of the squad from “Death Valley.” South Carolina rose to the occasion in this year’s season finale in hopes of playing the spoiler role. They gave it everything they had, but would ultimately fall short in a 37-32 loss.

Due to a mixture of of losses that make no sense, a coach who gave up mid-season, recruits who withdrew their commitment, embarrassing on-field play, and a coaching hire that has only been deemed acceptable by a a portion of the fan base, the excitement hasn’t declined in Columbia, South Carolina. It’s fallen off a cliff.

Now, the battle shifts to recruiting boards, where the Gamecocks seem to be getting their posterior handed to them too; and finally, supporters of the garnet and black have something to smile about. Will Muschamp has managed to convince four-star wide receiver Bryan Edwards to change his mind about Clemson and come to Columbia after all. Edwards is 6-foot-3, 208 pounds. His 40 time was clocked at 4.5 seconds, and he has the physical gifts to excel in the uptempo offense Muschamp will look to employ.

The balance of power hasn’t shifted yet, but at least they finally beat the Tigers at something.
