This has been one of the most talked about offseasons in Columbia for quite some time. Will Muschamp walked right in and went right to work. Since then, four-star recruits have signed and decided not to sign. The disappointment of last year is starting to fade slightly because people may not know what this will translate to on the field, but they can clearly see movement and something is happening.
Then, everyone was caught off guard on the morning of January 7. Skai Moore announced he would return to the South Carolina Gamecocks to play his senior season. Moore was expected to forego his senior season and declare his entry into the NFL Draft in April. Many South Carolina fans could stick their chest out knowing that, on a team where the defense is one of their biggest unknowns, they will have the defense’s most reliable player over the last three years on the field when the season kicks off.
In each of his first three years, Moore led the Gamecocks in tackles. In 2013 and 2015, he also led the team in interceptions. The current rumor is the coaching staff is hinting at using Moore in both the linebacker and safety positions to take advantage his ball skills and physicality that anyone who has watched this team play over the last three years has become accustomed to seeing. Moore has been this team’s lone standout on defense. The interesting thing about moving him to safety is he’s 6-foot-2 and 205 pounds and has amazing athletic ability. The safety position may be his natural position when he actually transitions into the NFL.
Win, lose, or draw, 2016 is already feeling like it’s better than this 2015 was.
