Michigan State has been known in the recent decade for producing quarterbacks who go on to have productive NFL careers. Aside from the Washington Redskins‘ Kirk Cousins, none have shown that they can be much better than average, though recently departed signal-caller Connor Cook has as much potential as any.
It’s a testament to head coach Mark Dantonio, who has helped to turn the program completely around since taking the reins from John L. Smith in 2007. He’ll have a decision to make before fall rolls around, as he’ll have to choose between a senior, a junior and a true freshman to succeed Cook behind center.
Soon-to-be senior Tyler O’Connor would likely have the advantage if the season started today. He took the most snaps last season when Cook was out with an injury and shockingly led an upset over Ohio State to propel the Spartans to the Big Ten Championship Game and ultimately into the College Football Playoff. Damion Terry also played in the game, but he only attempted four passes.
It’s very likely that both will be challenged by incoming freshman Messiah deWeaver who is one of six commits to have already enrolled with the school.
DeWeaver is a pro-style but mobile quarterback from Wayne High School in Dayton, Ohio.
The 19-year-old quarterback has so many tools that make him an exciting prospect. He possesses great accuracy inside and outside of the pocket and also has great awareness. He’s not afraid to throw the ball down the field and shows a great deal of accuracy when he pulls the trigger. His game is comparable to Cam Newton‘s when you look at the tape.
It’s far too soon to know who Dantonio will go with in September, but deWeaver is certainly the Spartans’ quarterback of the future. If Dantonio shies away from the freshman right out of the gate, expect O’Connor to start and Terry to back up while deWeaver redshirts.
