According to ESPN, which has confirmed a Yahoo! Sports original report, the NCAA has charged Ole Miss with multiple rules violations in football, women’s basketball and track and field. The Yahoo! piece reports that the school is facing around 30 violations.
Via a statement Friday, athletic director Ross Bjork did not elaborate on the allegations. But ESPN’s sources suggest the school had expected a notice of allegations for some time.
“As has been the case for the past three years, we are bound by confidentiality and cannot comment publicly on the matter,” Bjork said. “However, I can say that I’m confident in how our coaches and staff operate our program, and we take compliance, NCAA and SEC rules very seriously. We are working hard to seek a resolution to this matter.”
Many of the allegations are either not connected to football, or go back to Houston Nutt‘s tenure as head coach from 2008-11. A reported newer allegation surrounding Ole Miss football centers on offensive tackle (and current top NFL prospect) Laremy Tunsil, who was investigated for receiving improper benefits during the 2015 season and missed seven games.
Current head coach Hugh Freeze has come under scrutiny for his recruiting success at Ole Miss, which is evidenced by having three potential top-10 picks in this spring’s NFL draft. Some sort of penalty seems likely for the three aforementioned programs that reportedly violated rules, and the Ole Miss football program seems unlikely to escape unscathed.
