Former Tulane quarterback Tanner Lee announced Saturday that he would be leaving New Orleans for Lincoln this summer as he’s made the decision to transfer to the University of Nebraska.
In two seasons for the Green Wave, Lee started 19 games, throwing for 3,601 yards along with 23 touchdowns and 21 interceptions. Lee also considered LSU, but he was never extended an offer to join the Tigers.
Lee will finish the spring semester at Tulane before heading to Lincoln over the summer. In accordance with NCAA rules, he’ll have to sit out the 2016 season before competing for the starting position. Incumbent starter Tommy Armstrong Jr. will be returning for his senior season and is fully expected to hold the job through the remainder of his eligibility.
Nebraska had their most disappointing season in recently memory in 2015, completing the campaign with a 6-7 record in their first season under head coach Mike Riley following the abrupt firing of Bo Pelini. Somehow, the program extended their bowl streak to eight seasons as they were invited to the Foster Farms Bowl with a dismal 5-7 record. They made the most of the opportunity, defeating UCLA by a score of 37-29.
Armstrong Jr. also struggled on an individual level in 2015. He put up big numbers but was also incredibly mistake-prone. The soon-to-be senior threw for 3,030 yards over 12 games. He threw 22 touchdowns and 16 interceptions.
As it currently stands, Lee will be competing with Zack Darlington, A.J. Bush and Patrick O’Brien when he becomes eligible in 2017. He’ll have just one year of eligibility with the Huskers unless the NCAA grants him a sixth-year due to an injury while with Tulane.
